About This Product
A thin, weak lawn can be a real bummer. But getting it back to its thick, green glory doesn't have to be complicated. Scotts Turf Builder Thick'R Lawn Tall Fescue Mix is the simple, all-in-one solution you've been looking for. We've combined three essentials into one easy-to-use product. First, there's the seed, which fills in those thinning areas and gaps. Then, we added fertilizer to give both new and existing grass the nutrients they need to grow thicker and greener. Finally, there's a soil improver that enhances root development, creating a stronger foundation for your lawn. It’s a straightforward, three-pronged attack that will get you a lawn that's up to 50% thicker (subject to proper care, results may vary based on the current condition of your lawn).

Where & When to Use
Where to Use: This is for your whole lawn, and it's a real hero on those thin, struggling areas.
Where Not to Use: This product is not intended for filling in bare spots or establishing a new lawn. Steer clear of applying near water, like storm drains or ditches. And it's best to hold off if you've got heavy rain in the forecast.
How to Use: This is your go-to for thickening up a thin lawn.
When to Use: The sweet spot for applying is in the spring or in the late summer/early fall.
How Often to Use: For a truly top-notch lawn, we recommend applying once in the spring and again in the late summer or early fall.
How To Use
- Get the Lawn Ready: First things first, mow the lawn down to about 2 inches. Then, grab a rake and give it a good going-over to loosen up the soil and clear out any old, dead grass.
- Time to Apply: Pour the product into your Scotts spreader, set it to the right number, and take a steady walk across your lawn to make sure you get nice, even coverage.
- Just Add Water: This part's a biggie. For the first two weeks, you'll want to water every day (or as needed) to keep the soil moist. This helps the new seeds get their start. You can get back to your regular mowing routine once the new grass is tall enough.
Spreader Settings
- Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 9 1/2
- Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (3 passes)
- Scotts Drop Spreaders: 14 (2 passes)
- Scotts Wizz Spreader: 5 3/4 (2 passes)
Watering Tips
Don't be shy with the water for those first two weeks. Keeping the soil consistently moist is the secret to getting those new seeds to sprout. Think 'damp,' not 'drenched.' Once the grass is established, you can cut back.
Product Tips
- Know When to Go: You'll get the best results if you apply this in the spring or late summer/early fall when the weather is just right.
- Give the Mower a Break: Let the new grass grow until it's as tall as the rest of your lawn before you mow it for the first time.
- Handling Bare Spots: Got some really empty patches? For those, we'd point you to Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair. It's made just for that
- Starting a New Lawn: If the bare areas in your lawn are extensive or you're starting a new lawn, we recommend using one of our Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass products instead.
Product Safety
- Heads-Up on the Seed: We've treated the seed with a fungicide to protect it from disease. Because of that, it's not meant for food, feed, or oil.
- Store it Smart: Keep the bag in a safe place, away from food and out of reach of children.
- Keep it Tidy: Use a broom or blower to sweep any granules that land on your driveway or sidewalk back onto the lawn. It helps keep our waterways clean.
How do I store leftover product?
Got some left over? No sweat. Just keep it in the original bag in a cool, dry spot like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets.
When will I see results?
You'll start seeing that hard work pay off in about 2-3 weeks, as long as you're giving it the proper care. Every lawn's a little different, so your results might vary depending on where you started.
Can I use this on a new lawn?
This product is really meant for giving a boost to a lawn that's already there but just a bit thin. If the bare areas in your lawn are extensive or you're starting a whole new lawn from scratch, you'll want to grab one of our Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass products instead.
Do I really need to water every day?
For the first two weeks, you bet. Keeping the soil consistently moist is the most important part of the job. It's what wakes up the seeds and gets them growing.
